Iconic Signs of Halifax

Hand-drawn, unique signage adds so much charm to a neighbourhood, and I’ve been admiring a few signs around Halifax for a number of years. As our city evolves and grows, I wanted to create a tribute to a few of my favourites and learn a little bit about the history behind them. I created a design for the “Iconic Signs of Halifax (Vol. 1)” which is available as a 16x20 Print or a Postcard. Purchase the print & learn more about this project below:

Pilcher’s Flowers

2778 Windsor St.

When I reached out to Pilcher’s Flowers about this project, they shared the very sad news that they’ll be closing at the end of September. I was so glad that I had the chance to capture their amazing sign in a print so it can continue to live on.

This floral shop originally opened on Gottingen Street in Halifax, and has been at their iconic Windsor Street location for more than 40 years. Their incredible neon signs were installed at the shop around 1953 or 1954, according to their son, Charles Pilcher.

De Mone’s Barber Shop

3078 Agricola St.

Established in 1928, De Mone’s is Metro Halifax’s oldest barber shop. This sign was put up by the original owner sometime in the 1950s after their previous sign blew down, and it’s been there ever since.

C. Robertson Electric Bikes

5514 Cunard St.

Home to this location since 1927! It’s estimated that this sign was painted and installed in 2002, when they began selling electric bikes.

Many locals hang out in this shop to swap stories and as shop owner Joanne shared, “we haven’t been here all these years by being rude”.

Brothers Meats & Delicatessen

2665 Agricola St.

A staple in the north end for more than 60 years, this beautiful handpainted sign is estimated to have been put up on their shop in the early ‘80s. On the side of their shop is another amazing neon sausage sign, which is referred to be locals as “The North Star”.

Brothers is a family-run business through and through — daughter of the Brothers, Crystal, shared that their sign maintains an “old world charm … that's kind of what we’re known for here at Brothers, staying true to our roots, using the same recipes as our Grandparents and the same old-world cooking methods and techniques.”

Ardmore Tea Room

6499 Quinpool Rd.

Bluenose Laundromat

2198 Windsor St.

Brooklyn Warehouse

2795 Windsor St.

Conceptualized and handpainted by the late Leo Christakos, this stylish “RESTAURANT” lettering was installed to support the restaurant’s opening in 2007. Leo wanted to evoke the kind of retro/mid-century signage one would see on an eatery in a big city. Inspired by places in Montreal and New York, his team wanted Brooklyn Warehouse to have a ‘big city feel’ for the people of Halifax to enjoy.

Leo was a NSCAD graduate who always had a keen eye and appreciation for the visual arts. His vision and art forms live on in the decor, branding, and themes found in Brooklyn Warehouse, Ace Burger Co., Battery Park Beer Bar & Eatery.
